It was my dream to become a published memoirist. However, I’ve come to realize that emotional intimacy is earned. It is not a commodity from which to make money.
I’m a talented writer and I enjoy writing so it seems like the perfect way to make a living, but not if I’m later ashamed about what I shared.
Maybe some memoirs help people and encourage people (like Scary Close by Donald Miller), but it’s not always worth the cost of sharing your struggles with the world.
If I want to make money doing something I love, there are many other options beyond writing, and who knows, maybe I’ll write fiction.
Or maybe I’ll still write a memoir. We’ll see.
